Repco Beach Hop Whangamatā: Classic American Cars Take Over New Zealand’s Coast
The beach town of Whangamatā, located on the Coromandel Peninsula near Auckland, is usually defined by its calm, predictable rhythm. For most of the year, the town is sleepy and idyllic, shared between dairy farmers, their families, and the occasional visitor seeking an unhurried coastal escape. Long mornings, quiet streets, and uninterrupted ocean views are the norm.
Each March, however, that calm is dramatically interrupted.
What Is the Repco Beach Hop?
From the 22nd to the 26th of March, Whangamatā becomes the epicentre of classic American car culture in New Zealand. The Repco Beach Hop is a multi-day celebration of vintage vehicles, petrol engines, and automotive history. Rather than a closed motorsport event, it feels more like an open-air festival—one that welcomes everyone.Spectators can enjoy the event for free, wandering the streets and beachfront to view the cars up close. For a modest registration fee, owners can enter their vehicles and actively participate in one of New Zealand’s most iconic car events.
A Super-Organised Grassroots Car Event
For what is essentially a home-grown event, the Repco Beach Hop is impressively well organised and professionally run. As someone entering the world of classic cars for the first time, I found the experience accessible and welcoming. The technical details—engine builds, restorations, and mechanical craftsmanship—are best left to the experts, but the visual impact alone is enough to captivate anyone.
Classic American Cars
One rule defines the Repco Beach Hop: the cars must be American. There are no European or Asian models here—only vehicles that reflect the golden age of U.S. automotive design. Dodge, Buick, Ford, Shelby, and Studebaker models line the streets, representing classic generations from the 1950s through to the 1970s.
Alongside the cars are equally striking American trucks and caravans, reinforcing the nostalgic atmosphere and turning Whangamatā into a rolling museum of mid-century Americana.
The Car Enthusiast Community was from all over New Zealand
While the variety of vehicles is impressive, the community behind them is even more compelling. This is a deeply authentic New Zealand experience. Some cars have been meticulously restored from little more than a bare chassis, rebuilt into immaculate showpieces. Others are raw, welded-together hot rods that look as though they belong in a Mad Max film—rough, loud, and unapologetically individual.
More Than a Hobby - A Shared Passion
Despite their differences, all these cars share one common thread: the passion of the people who own them. The enthusiasm on display goes far beyond a casual hobby. For many, this is a lifelong commitment and a genuine love affair with their vehicles. When people say New Zealand is full of surprises, they are not wrong. The Repco Beach Hop in Whangamatā proves that even the quietest coastal towns can become something extraordinary—if only for a few roaring days each year.
